Jean-Luc Brunel was a French modeling agent who ran Karin Models in Paris and later co-founded [MC2 Model Management](/organizations/mc2-model-management/) in New York with reported funding from [Jeffrey Epstein](/people/jeffrey-epstein/). He was the subject of decades of abuse allegations within the modeling industry, was placed under formal investigation in France in December 2020 for the rape of minors over fifteen and sexual harassment, in an inquiry that also covered the trafficking of minors, and was found hanged in his cell at La Santé Prison in Paris in February 2022.

### Modeling Career

Brunel was born on September 18, 1946 in Neuilly-sur-Seine and worked in restaurant public relations before entering modeling as a scout in the 1970s, acquiring the Paris agency Karin Models from its founder Karin Mossberg and running it by 1978.[^1] He claimed to have launched the careers of models including Monica Bellucci, Sharon Stone and Christy Turlington, and his contemporaries in the Paris and New York agency business included John Casablancas, founder of Elite Model Management, and the agent Paolo Zampolli.[^2] Brunel later restructured Karin Models' U.S. division into a new agency.[^1]

A 1988 60 Minutes investigation titled "American Girls in Paris," reported by Diane Sawyer, interviewed nearly two dozen American models who said Brunel and his fellow Paris agent Claude Haddad had drugged and raped them.[^3] Around the same time the CBS correspondent Craig Pyes spoke with additional models who made similar claims.[^2] The journalist Michael Gross documented allegations against Brunel in his 1995 book *Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women,* quoting industry figures who described him as a predator and said he belonged "behind bars."[^2] Brunel consistently denied wrongdoing, saying he "strongly den[ied] having committed any illicit act or any wrongdoing" in his work as a scout and agency manager.[^1]

### MC2 Model Management

Around 2004 to 2005 Brunel founded MC2 Model Management, with operations in New York and Miami, building it out of the restructured U.S. division of Karin Models.[^2] Financial records cited in litigation showed Jeffrey Epstein wired about one million dollars to Brunel in connection with the launch, and Epstein provided MC2 a line of credit; some accounts put his total backing closer to two million dollars.[^2] Maritza Vasquez, MC2's former bookkeeper, testified in a 2010 deposition that Epstein had invested roughly one million dollars in the agency.[^2]

U.S. prosecutors and investigators reported that they believed MC2 functioned as a cover to recruit and supply women and girls for Jeffrey Epstein.[^4]

Epstein's bank, [JPMorgan Chase](/organizations/jpmorgan-chase/), reviewed the agency internally. According to shareholder complaints quoting the bank's records, a March 2011 JPMorgan report stated that "MC2 Model Management and Jeffrey Epstein engaged in racketeering that involved luring in minor children for sexual play for money," that MC2's owner was a "frequent passenger on Epstein's private jet and often visited Epstein in jail," and that Epstein had paid MC2 one million dollars in 2005, "unknown if the money was given as a secret investment or payment for services as a procurer." A 2011 compliance summary recorded that press reports said girls were brought "to the US via a modeling agency M2 that is owned by a guy named Brunel," and that "the banker said today we extended Epstein a loan in relation to this modeling agency"; the loan was a JPMorgan letter of credit to MC2. The writer judged the agency "legit." The bank continued doing business with Epstein personally until 2013, and payments drawn from his JPMorgan accounts included nearly 1.5 million dollars to known recruiters including MC2.[^5] Flight logs placed Brunel on Epstein's aircraft, including a February 2005 flight with the model [Nadia Marcinkova](/people/nadia-marcinkova/), and visitor records reportedly showed Brunel visiting Epstein dozens of times during his 2008 to 2010 Florida incarceration.[^2] Brunel denied these allegations.[^1]

### Allegations Connected to Jeffrey Epstein

Multiple women accused Brunel of drugging and sexually assaulting them in Paris during the 1980s and 1990s.[^1] [Virginia Giuffre](/people/virginia-giuffre/), who accused Jeffrey Epstein of trafficking her, alleged that Brunel sexually abused her and supplied young women and girls to Epstein, stating in sworn accounts that Epstein had directed her to provide sexual services to Brunel.[^6] In a 2015 court filing she said she had "sexual intercourse with Jean-Luc Brunel many times" between the ages of 16 and 19.[^2]

Giuffre alleged in her filings that Brunel had "many contacts" with young girls and could "get dozens" of them, and she claimed he had an arrangement to obtain passports that allowed him to bring girls "ranging in age from 12 to 24" into the [United States](/places/united-states/).[^2] In one filing she said Epstein had boasted of sleeping with more than 1,000 of Brunel's girls.[^1] [Sarah Ransome](/people/sarah-ransome/), who sued Epstein and Maxwell in 2017, produced in [Giuffre v. Maxwell](/events/giuffre-v-maxwell/) dozens of photographs of young women on Epstein's island, some of which she said Brunel had taken and given to her.[^7] U.S. prosecutors and investigators reported that they believed Brunel was used to recruit and supply women and girls for Jeffrey Epstein, and Brunel denied the allegations.[^4]

### Arrest and Death

Brunel was detained on December 16, 2020 at Charles de Gaulle Airport in [Paris](/places/paris/) as he prepared to board a flight to Dakar, Senegal. The Paris Prosecutor's Office had opened its investigation in August 2019, the month of Epstein's death in New York, and a public call for witnesses in September 2019 brought reports from several former models of incidents spanning three decades. According to court filings by Virginia Giuffre, Brunel "offered modeling opportunities to lure young girls, some as young as 12, to the U.S."[^4][^8] He was charged with the rape of minors over 15 and sexual harassment, and was placed under formal investigation in a case encompassing rape and sexual assault of minors under and over 15, sexual harassment, criminal association and human trafficking of minors for the purposes of sexual exploitation.[^9] He was held in pre-trial detention and maintained his innocence.[^6] The prosecutors' statement described the charges as "rape of minors over the age of 15 and sexual harassment."[^8] At the end of June 2021 he was placed under formal investigation a second time, for the rape of a minor over fifteen, concerning an adolescent. He was released for a few days at the end of 2021 and then returned to detention.[^10]

On February 19, 2022 Brunel was found hanged with bedsheets in his cell at La Santé Prison in Paris at around 1:30 a.m.; he was 75.[^6] French authorities treated the death as a suicide, and a medical examiner reported death by hanging.[^9] He died in custody before facing trial, leaving the allegations unadjudicated.[^9] His lawyers said that his "distress was that of a 75-year-old man crushed by a media-judicial system" and that he had never stopped proclaiming his innocence; under French law his death extinguished the public action against him, though not against any other person implicated.[^10]

The French investigation into the wider network of allegations against Brunel and others connected to Epstein remained open after his death, with French prosecutors continuing to examine the trafficking and abuse claims.[^4] His death, the second of a central Epstein figure to occur in custody and be ruled a suicide after Epstein's own 2019 death, drew renewed scrutiny from lawyers for the alleged victims.[^9]
