Chile was the South American nation where Central Intelligence Agency Deputy Director of Operations Bill Nelson's superior ran the agency's controversial destabilization program that culminated in the overthrow and murder of elected President Salvador Allende in 1973. Nelson oversaw this operation during his tenure at the CIA.1

CIA Operations

The CIA's Chile program became a template for later covert operations in Central America, including the Contra war. The methods developed in Chile, including the use of propaganda, economic warfare, and support for opposition groups, were applied on a larger scale in Nicaragua. The Chile operation demonstrated the CIA's willingness to undermine democratic governments in pursuit of U.S. foreign policy objectives, a pattern that continued through the Contra era and the protection of drug trafficking assets.2
